India's best Brand Identities

Not counting but listing some of the most prominent names in India that have not only made a mark globally but done in style. For a change they have great brand identities too! Check it out! ( they are in no particular order)

The king of good times!

Simple witty clean iconic logo - Now stamped it's place of the fortune 500s

The hospitable mascot of Air India - still alive and kicking!

Many more to come soon!

Fabindia - 50 years and counting!

A fairly young company based on the cultures and crafts of India was ironically founded by an american in the 1960s.   Basic hand woven, naturally dyed and block printed indian outfits and home accessories was the start of a revolution in India and abroad. The delhi university wouldn't exist without fabindia kurta teamed up with denims, a jhola and kohlapuris. A perfect artist or rock star look of every student!

Fabindia gave India an irreversible recognition for its skills and techniques. The airy cotton kurtas were nt great silhouettes but were great for teh scorching Delhi heat. Team a kurta with a salwar of your choice and match a dupatta - the possibilities or combination made splashes of colors and statements! There are still no rules to wearing a fabindia outfit - anything goes AND rocks!

in 2004 they added organic foods to their products - perfect timing as the whole world was hooting about organic food - The kind that comes in smaller packaging and twice the price and mostly dull colours. i don't know what the commotion is all about but whatever! Soon after was the introduction of natural / hand made personal care products.. Now India is known for its hand made things and beauty things and fabindia already had a set market... They didn't even make it look good.. The organic foods would lie in the corner table piled one on top of the other and people bought it.. They were super expensive too.. But here's the thing - foreigners come stuffed in buses to shop at Fabindia! It's a one stop shop (now MANY) to experience, buy and feel india! What's better is that it's cheap and makes great gifts for friends and family back home.. So anything they do works well.. I'm not saying that their products are bad.. They are good - but now they've reached a stage where anything they touch is gold!

I personally never liked those clothes.. I hate the block printing and the colors fade or run on first few washes. Also the designs are repetitive.. But that's my opinion.. i have friends who swear by the dark kohl eyes and chunky silver jewellery with fabindia looks!!.. BTW, they started their own line of hand made jewellery also!

They still have their original shop n Greater Kailash in New Delhi and infact with a shop for each division of fabindia - they have now practically taken over the whole market.. They have almost 9 shops now selling all sorts of goodies.. it's a must visit if you ever go to New Delhi. They have a fab cafe with organic healthy salads and drinks with whey and all sorts fresh fruits and vege juices too.. Bravo to this young company!!

So the brand identity - that runs more with the goodwill than the design, kinda took the design front for their personal care product packaging.. Nothing exceptional - very earthy and basic.. almost like the stuff they make. Although i've seen a lot of bold colors and awesome prints in their too - i wonder why they went with something so dulling.

This is what i mean - the moment you say - hand made or organic - people  associate it with dirty earthy colors and recycled brown paper look and textured paper... Which SOUNDS great.. but i've never seen it look as good!

Lush does the same thing and makes it look like a million bucks! I might buy this product for its quality but i won't be excited to display it on my dressing table.

If they ad a corporate social responsibility aspect to this and go green - which i think they are moving to.. they will be the biggest ever !!

NIrulas

Here's another great brand!

I don't know wether it's just me or is New Delhi plainly a composition of food! Somehow - the food brands have been around for ages and they keep up with times to serve generations.. And end up in my list of brand revamps in India... Oh well!

Birthday parties, kitties, family outings, ice creams.. Niruals was the place our parents would take us for good grades, being nice, helping in the house or just being polite - a reward in a way. Later it became a hot spot for friends to hang out with or for dates.. Now we take our kids there.. it's been there forever!

A hot Chocolate Fudge that started at "icre-cream prices" now costs 10 times it's price - but is still the favorite amongst all delhi-ites.. and no other ice cream - whether Baskins or Kwality or Gelatto can beat the taste of an original HFC!

The nirula family came to Delhi in the 1920s. A small new venture that introduced some of the finest most newest cuisines and specialities in India. I've driven to connaught place specially for the super  cheap (not anymore) salad bar with a great ambience and awesome service! The nirulas potpourri was one if it's kind - always packed and always maintained it's service too.

Nirulas never changed their branding either - a part of every OLD business feels that their value lies in their original logo - whereas i beg to differ.. I feel that their value in in their product and in their service and if they revamp they can only attract the new generation and new customers from this time as opposed to loosing the old ones.. The old ones are already addicted - if you've done good.. but somehow the branding NEVER changes!

Well ateast the look and the feel changes.. The adverts and menus change!.. The interiors look fresher and less cluttered and play of colors is very nice too!

This ad campaign was great - photographed by one of my favorite food photographers in Delhi - Sirish Sen and Designed by Shivjeet Kullar's Kfactor - the Ad campaign was a very new take on - well, junk food! THey made it look healthy :-) To top that the witty use of things to promote the Nirulas burgers was very interesting too!

What i like the most is the typically desi slogans for the typically desi customer - DIRECT HIT!

In addition to their great food and service they have a bakery section as well - Custom made cakes and cookies with jelly bites - which were my favorite thing in the whole world when i was little! They are not extravagant - they are very basic - but good! You can buy all sorts of things at Nirulas bakery shop - like the famous Hot Chocolate Fudge syrup, jams and cooking sauces. While the packaging really blows - the products are 5 on 5!!

Recently Nirulas got taken over by some Asian company - Hopefully they will make a change!
Though most people seem to feel or atleast say that Nirulas is not the same in its food anymore, i still enjoy my afternoons with friends and enjoy the food just as much as i always did!

Amul - Utterly Butterly Delicious!

I can't even begin to explain what an important brand Amul is! Tell me one Indian who didn't have this Utterly Butterly Delicious butter in his childhood! Or as an adult smiled at the advert in the newspaper!
Even though the branding changed today - The girl mascot so totally stay and how!

A little girl's illustration with a slogan like "utterly butterly delicious" - still rings in my head when i see this brand. The marketing was fantastic the product was i think the only one of it's kind at the time. Well atleast the only one with a real branding and campaigns. So, it constantly played on tv and we saw the ads in the paper and ofcourse in the fridge!

Amul is another histroic brand from the 1960s. The first day it put it's hoarding up with a little girl "spreading" the message - it became the talk of the town and the country soon to follow. For ages it was just the butter.. You would walk into the grocery store and blindly ask for AMUL and not butter.

Their adverts were fantastic! Because these were hand illustrated - they always maintained the old world charm about them - but at the same time they were up to date with the latest happenings and events in - the parliament, bollywood, stock market or fashion trends - which made them so easy to relate to and constantly be the buss of the nation. They followed the KISS (keep it simple stupid) rule perfectly.. humble ads that related to every household and with no extra effort! Ofcourse there was effort from teh creative teams behind the scene who were wracking their brains every day for this ripple effect!

Amitabh Bachhan - Kaun Banega Crorepati

Gladiator

Bollywood movie

These a minor percentage of the the ads.. They should have an art exhibition with this classics!

A few decade ago.. The milk, paneer, chocolates and ice creams came in and made this product grow roots so deep into the indian market that no new brand has been able to shake it. Sure we have Britannia and mother dairy - which is divided amongst sections of people - but amul rules the masses! THe smallest town in India sells Amul.

The newest addition to the Brand has been the sugar free ice creams. With the new trend of DIET food - this hits the nail on the head! Love the packaging. The colors and photography and the spaced out layouts.. So unlike what you get to see in India - up until now anyway..!

Packaging - Haldiram

Haldiram started as a tiny sweets shop in Bikaner, India in 1937. In 1982 came to Delhi - the capital of India and has grown ever since.

As a child, i grew up on haldiram sweets and savories. Every Diwali, there were boxes of sweets from haldiram piled up in the house - packed in colorful cellophane wrap and each box opened to a wonderful variety of colorful sweets.

Today Haldiram is a common household name in India and Indian homes abroad. I now live in Switzerland and i still have ready food mixes, namkeens and gol gappa packets stacked in my kitchen. Every Indian shop here also prides itself to sell Haldirams. I don't remember seeing an advertisement of Haldiram on TV ever - but their quality, hospitality and great food speaks for itself.

Today they have namkeens, varieties of sweets, ready to eat foods, syrups and sherbets, pre packed foods for people like us abroad and restaurants all over india that take pride in amazing vegetarian food. (This is making me hungry)

Not too long ago they revamped their look and came out with a brand new packaging and brand identity. Word has it - the sons joined the business :-)..

I love their new packaging and i think it's totally in line with today's fashion and targets every age group. The logo changed and the interiors looked great and packaging was beautiful. But they can't seem to let go of the original logo. It keeps coming back. I see a bit of inconsistency with some of the packaging staying as it was. Would've love to see them go all the way.

Nevertheless, their food still rocks, the website looks great !!

I once met with Itu chaudhary - who worked with his team on the packaging for Haldiram and many other  great names in India. At the time Haldiram was in the making and i got a sneak preview into it.  I have to say - they did change the brand around!

Logos: Before and after

Some of the new packaging

Even though all this packaging is very nice and colorful -  much better than the cluttered look  before - what i can't seem to find anymore is the packaging below - which came around two years ago in a big way - but kinda got lost half way through - You see this every once in a while:

Small icons in colorful illustrated forms very very nice and clean - the packaging had lots of white space with splashes of color and great focus on the branding. Not much of this is visible anymore... WHAT HAPPENED??
